In this conversation with video artist Oliver Ressler the complex interplay of reporting, creating and dissimulating comes to play in his art, as he uses the existing documentary formats in order to express living social forces, aimed at changing the status quo. We discuss how his art originated in the moment of the Seattle protests, how it followed the documentary needs aimed at public expressions of critique and alternatives to extractive capitalism and how the documentary form exposes the still pertinent problems related with representation, of social movements, indigenous peoples, endangered species and other life forms.
Oliver Ressler produces installations, projects in public space, and films on economics, democracy, climate breakdown, forms of resistance and social alternatives. In the past few years he has focused primarily on climate breakdown, tipping points, CCS, and on the other hand on climate movements, (climate) activism, mass civil disobedience, as well as ways of standing up from a crisis - visions of how to rebuild, based on already existing solution, such as worker-controlled factories. Ressler had comprehensive solo exhibitions at National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC), Bucharest; SALT Galata, Istanbul; Museo Espacio, Aguascalientes, Mexico; and Belvedere 21, Vienna.
